Introducing Marie: Overcoming barriers at RE-create

PRINT

Issue: Spring 2023

Being an alumni at RE-create has given me a unique perspective as the youth outreach worker and community developer. I find I come back to this experience to draw upon when I am looking for ways I can meet youth where they are at as I continue to settle into my role and build connections.

In 2023, we’ve been fortunate enough to see some of the fruits of our efforts as our numbers at open studios have slowly increased. I connect regularly with partner agencies in the community like Notre Dame, Youth Wellness Centre, & Living Rock.

One of the challenges I’ve noticed is the fear and hesitancy around leaving a known space to come into a new, unfamiliar space. In one specific situation, I was building connection with a youth on my outreach walks for about 3 months. Finally, with the incentive of the Christmas party, snacks, presents, and my offer to walk with, to and from the event, this youth agreed to attend. Now they are almost a constant presence at our regular Studios. It was just a matter of getting over those barriers.

Going into the spring and summer seasons as a team here at RE-create, I know that’s what we will continue to strive to do: break down those barriers so we can bring creativity and connection to the youth that need it the most.

Marie Sinclair is the Youth Outreach Worker & Community Developer for RE-create Outreach Art Studio.
