There is an excellent team of planners who are bringing various types of expertise to the table, including great marketing and fundraising ideas as well as social media help.
Students in the business class at Quinte Christian High School hosted a fun fundraiser. They provided an amazing evening featuring a spaghetti dinner, bake sale, cake auction and great country singers. Altogether, they raised $1500 for the conference!
Faith and Hope Ministries provides resources and training for families, caregivers and faith communities caring for those with mental illness. And since 1 in 5 people have some form of mental illness, virtually every one of us knows people dealing with mental health issues.
The Hope Conference has resources for people living with mental health issues, their families and supporters, as well as for church members and leaders wanting to learn more about mental illness and how to effectively support parishioners who experience emotional and mental health concerns.
We are so excited to have Amy Simpson as our keynote speaker. Amy is the author of the book Troubled Minds: Mental Illness and the Church’s Mission, which has received great reviews and is highly recommended for all church leaders. She not only brings her personal story and experience of growing up with a mother who had schizophrenia, but also has so many tips and ideas about how the church could be a more helpful community to families who are struggling as caregivers, children and spouses in these circumstances. She provides much hope for all of us based on her strong faith and her optimistic outlook as to how the church is changing.
We are pleased to also have Dr. Victor Shepherd as a speaker. Dr. Shepherd is a professor at Tyndale and Adjunct Professor of Theology at the University of Toronto. He will provide much needed information for fellow pastors and church leaders through his experiences as a long-time advocate for those with mental illness.
Our breakout sessions give some time for smaller group discussions on topics such as suicide, family caregiving, family experiences, and tips/helps for churches.
The Best Western Hotel and Conference Centre in Cobourg provides an excellent setting with great food and atmosphere for the day. They make an exceptional lunch and offer lots of snacks, including excellent cookies according to the feedback from participants at previous conferences!
