The Centre For Workplace Engagement

Gallup has consistently done polling designed to assess the level of “engagement” that workers have in their jobs. The results are staggering and sobering. The outcomes of poor engagement are workplace realities that too many of us may know all too well: high absenteeism, stress leaves, high turnover, workplace safety issues, poor productivity, and loss of profitability.

We also know that bullying and harassment are increasingly problems in workplaces.

All of these lead to relationship and mental health difficulties surfacing at workplaces—and these dramatically affect workplace performance. And this has led the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) to announce their national “Standard on Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace”.

As a manager, supervisor or CEO, what can you do?

Centre for Workplace Engagement

You can engage Shalem’s Centre for Workplace Engagement (CWE). CWE is a consortium of experienced “restorative practice” practitioners from various sectors, including labour, engaged in workplace safety and health. Building on what you already do well in the workplace, our practitioners provide a framework and consistent set of practices that support healthy relationships and conflict transformation in the workplace. CWE effectively helps you transform workplace conflict in such a way that harm is repaired, relationships are strengthened, and everyone can move on. We also help you build an engagement culture in your workplace that helps to prevent further conflict, resolves conflict effectively when it happens, and increases worker satisfaction—all in line with the CSA’s new Standard. All of this results in better results for you—and a better bottom line.

We have worked in many workplace settings and have a track record of success! Please visit the CWE website and contact Anne Martin, CWE Facilitator, to find out how CWE can help you.

Restorative Practice Checklist

Is Your Workplace Practice:

  • Respectful (distinguishing the behaviour from the person)?
  • Fair (engaging others with explanations and clarifying expectations)?
  • Restorative (by repairing harm and building relationships)?
  • Does Your Workplace Practice?
  • Develop Empathy (through reflection, insight and learning)?
  • Enhance responsibility and accountability?
  • Promote positive behavioural change?

If you and everyone at your workplace adopted this checklist, how would that change your workplace results? Productivity? Your bottom line?

It was SO refreshing to engage members and management in a context other than a grievance meeting. Although we have systems in place (Labour-Management, Membership meetings, etc) to have member contact outside of conflict and grievances, I’m often frustrated with the outcome of these things in advancing positive relations. This process also served to accelerate the level of trust between our union and the management team. I really value that as the representative at this facility.
