This 30 hour course is for Psychotherapists, Couple & Family Therapists and Social Workers interested in developing their supervision knowledge and skills. This course has been pre-approved by CAMFT and is designed for professionals wishing to pursue their CRPO Supervisor status as well as CAMFT Supervisory Designation or to further develop their supervision skills. This course would be beneficial for supervisors working in private practice or agency settings, seeking to enrich their practice.

The instructors for the course are Brenda Bolliger MSW, RSW, RMFT-SM, Jennifer Myrie, DMin, RP, RMFT-S and Susan Winter Fledderus, RP, RMFT-SM, RSW. Brenda, Jennifer and Susan bring a dynamic teaching style which promises to keep you engaged. They have provided training, consultation and supervision in the field of Individual, Couple and Family therapy for over 20 years.

The course emphasizes the integration of supervision theory with selected supervision practice issues. It features a critical review of several major models of clinical supervision and a focus on facilitating the co-evolving supervision-therapy systems. Participants will develop and articulate a personal model of supervision. This course requires intense participation in a range of academic, interactive and reflective exercises designed for professional development.

This advanced clinical course is designed for experienced therapists who want to expand their practice to include training and supervising of other clinicians as they develop their skills in individual, couple and family therapy.

Each training day will include a mix of didactic presentation, interactional learning exercises, and large- and small-group discussion. Participants will:

1. Develop an understanding of the theories and methods of various models of supervision.
2. Distinguish between the roles and functions of a clinical supervisor and supervisee.
3. Understand how to facilitate the co evolving therapist-client, supervisor-therapist-client relationship while attending to the developmental levels within the supervision process.
4. Attend to issues of safe and effective use of self for both the supervisor and supervisee within the supervision and therapy context.
5. Develop strategies to structure supervision, address issues and implement supervisory interventions.
6. Engage in examining issues of diversity and contextual variables, such as race, culture, gender, sexual identity, and economics, as these may affect the dynamics of power and privilege in the therapist-client and supervisor-therapist-client systems.
7. Explore the legal and ethical issues of supervision.
8. Formulate a personal philosophy of supervision culminating in a Philosophy of Supervision evolving document.
9. Develop familiarity with the current literature, research, and best practices related to supervision practice.
10. Develop and use resources to facilitate the supervision process, such as learning contracts, skill and competency-based assessments, record keeping, and others.

Participants will complete 3 assignments. The first assignment involves co-leading a small group discussion about a specific supervision model, to be coordinated by course instructors before the course begins. Participants will also pair up to present a Supervision Case Study which reflects some of the processes and core competencies in supervision. Participants will be given more information upon registration. The final assignment is a 2000-word Philosophy of Supervision paper that is due 4 weeks after the course. Participants who satisfactorily complete all the requirements will be issued a course certificate.

Participants are responsible for obtaining the required texts and articles (it is possible to rent either text book through a service such as Kindle). It is highly recommended that participants read a majority of the selected readings prior to attending the course.
